Leadership Judgment Assessor

Leadership Judgement Assessor (LJA)

The LJA requires the person to use evidence from their own recent leadership experience to demonstrate their leadership judgement. This gives insight into how the LJA user actually interacts with reporting colleagues.

The LJA is unique in occupational assessment. It uses the dynamic assessment approach, which involves giving people feedback on their performance while they are being assessed.  It is then possible to see whether they are willing and able to improve their leadership judgement as they progress.  The LJA does this by asking people to describe good examples of times when they have been Directive, Consultative, Consensual or Delegative in their leadership decision making.  It then checks the logic of their thinking and challenges them if it appears that their stated approach does not square with the Formula 4 Model.

The LJA can be used as a focus for critical incident questioning at interview.  It can also form the basis of a candidate presentation.  It can add supplementary evidence to a LJI assessment and it is a logical precursor to an intervention by Coach on the Desktop (CotD) or the Personal Leadership Development Programme (PLDP) as it uses the same software.  When group data is available, it can also highlight issues about the organizational culture which can provide a focus for OD interventions.

As the LJA is not a psychometric test, it is available to HR and L&D professionals, irrespective of qualification. The LJA User Guide is essential to get the most out of its use.  Telephone supervision from the authors is also available.

EXAMPLE ASSIGNMENT -   You provide an assessment for development service for doctors in training.  Many of the doctors you see are working at Senior Registrar level and there is a clear and obvious need to explore their thinking about leadership decision making in actual work-place situations where they are leading a team of junior staff and nurses.  The Leadership Judgement Assessor is the instrument of choice as it provides tangible information for exploration during the development discussion.
